MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes produce a 10 times greater number of arc strikes, over conventional thoriated tungsten electrodes under the same conditions and provide a stable performance over the current range from 0 - 300 Amps.
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes have been developed with the health and safety of the end user in mind.
Non Carcinogenic, Non Radio-Toxic
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes can be used for welding of steels and alloys with DC as well as aluminium with AC techniques and provide a stable performance over the current range from 0 - 300 Amps.
The carefully balanced mix of non-radiotoxic dopants used in Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes will give you up to 10 times the number of arc strikes, over conventional 2% thoriated tungsten electrodes under identical conditions.
These MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are:
In addition, MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes lower the working temperature giving narrower, lower heat input welds. The number of arc strikes is increased before re-grinding is needed.
Techweld MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes have been developed with the Health and Safety of the end-user in mind.
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are totally traceable tungsten electrodes identified by a batch number and shown on our special packaging.
Immediate delivery is available for MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes.
Guaranteed Quality with Traceability
Techweld® MultiStrike®Tungsten Electrodes consist of a unique blend of dopants to allow them to perform at high, low and medium current ranges with TIG (GTAW) welding of steels, nickel and cobalt based materials, as well as titanium and aluminium alloys.
This unique blend of dopants greatly enhances electrode life by significantly increasing the number of arc strikes before re-grinding is necessary, generating an up to 10 times better performance from MultiStrike® Tungstens compared with thoriated tungsten electrodes.
In the photographs on the right you see a conventional 2% thoriated tungsten electrode after 10 arc strikes and on the right you see the Techweld® Multistrike® Tungsten Electrode after 200 arc strikes.
No Radio-Toxic Contents
Those who are uncertain of the true effects of red tipped thoriated tungsten electrodes can look at these measurements made by a radiation monitor. The difference in the readings can be seen clearly. Red tipped thoriated tungsten electrodes have over 60 times greater radiation output than the normal level existing in the environment.
Ask your health and safety department to measure the radiation output from 10 packs of thoriated tungstens together. They should have a monitor that will show you a similar result.
Here at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, your safety is our priority. Recognising the risk to health posed by the radiotoxic red tipped thoriated tungsten electrodes, we have developed MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes that are free from the potentially harmful thoria.
The red tipped thoriated tungsten contain thorium, a naturally occurring radioactive element incorporated into tungsten welding rods by a sintering process to improve their working properties. Thorium is a highly radiotoxic material and the main hazard is associated with inhalation of dust particles generated during tip grinding.
The radioactive meter tests, which show the radiation levels of 60 units or more for thoriated tungstens also shows that MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes produce near to a zero radiotoxic level because of the mix of non-radioactive rare earth elements.
Whether you are an employer who is looking after the Health and Safety of your employees and others, or if you are a welder concerned about the carcinogenic effects of conventional thoriated tungsten electrodes, you may wish to consider the safer alternative, Techweld® MultiStrike® Tungstens (MST).
Non Thoria, Safe, 'Green' Tungstens

The dopants are not radioactive and they are mixed in accurate proportions using statistical proportional control procedures, fully computerised to ensure that the tungstens are made to the same high standards every time.
The exact ingredients of MultiStrike® are part of the intellectual property of Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® who have carried out extensive research and development to bring a quality product to the market place that is totally traceable, reliable and repeatable.
The unique packaging gives a guarantee of product quality, reliability, repeatability, consistency and traceability.
MultiStrike® Tungstens conform to the rules and regulations of EN 26848 and ANSI/AWS A5 12m-98.
Some Specific Background and Science
The work function of a metal or alloy is the energy needed to remove an electron from Fermi level in the material to a point at an infinite distance outside the surface.
This is relevant to TIG welding since the lower the work function of an electrode, the lower the voltage necessary to strike an arc.
The work function of tungsten is 4.35 ev. Therefore, the addition of a stable metal oxide with a work function lower than pure tungsten, lowers the work function of the tungsten.
Thorium's work function is 3.4 ev.
The special blend of dopants in MultiStrike® has a work function of 2.9 ev.
Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®'s special blend of dopants along with its stringent in-house production specification ensure that the dopant is distributed evenly through the Techweld® MultiStrike® maintaining an even performance from start to finish.

William MacMillan, PCT Group
“Best Tungsten I have had the pleasure of using.”
Pete Barnes, Welder
“Without a doubt the best Tungsten Electrodes on the market.”
Alan MacTaggart, Welder
"Showing some love to the humble er-70 this weekend, gave me a nice opportunity to compare my regular "go to" tungsten (2% thoriated) with the @huntingdon_fusion multistrike that my good pal @westcoweld was kind enough to send me. I was sceptical sure but shouldn't have been, I hit 100 welds on each tungsten, 115amps with a run time of 8-9 seconds per strike, I repointed the redtail 4 times to keep the speed and consistency up..... the multistrike ploughed through all 100 and is now chomping into the next 100 with no need for a grind, quite staggering really! Thanks again man @westcoweld I'll be back for some more goodies when the wages roll in!"
RODGERS WELDING SUPPLIES INC,
"We manufacture small pharmaceutical fittings using manual TIG welding and produce tube joints using mechanised orbital welding. In both applications we have observed a four to five time improvement between re-grinding when replacing thoriated tungsten with your MultiStrike®."
Rodgers Welding Supplies Inc, New York, USA
ENGLISH ELECTRIC VALVE CO
"The number of arc strikes between re-sharpening is considerably greater with MultiStrike® than with thoriated electrodes. We also find the lower heat input is a benefit since we often weld in very close proximity to glass."
Senior Production Engineer
English Electric Valve Co, Essex, UK
BIRD PRECISION BELLOWS
"The introduction of MultiStrike® has been welcomed by all our welding staff. The new electrodes are giving excellent results and demonstrating much improved strike characteristics. Although more expensive than the previous electrodes, their life is significantly longer which is expected to lead to long-term cost savings. We are also aware of the health and safety benefits of using non-thoriated electrodes."
Bird Precision Bellows, Cheshire, UK
"We have tested your MultiStrike® under production conditions where we need to make short lengths welds using the TIG process. On a batch of 50 components only 2 light re-grinds were required compared to 7 heavy regrinds when using thoriated electrodes. Even when the welder occasionally touched the work with the electrode there was no material change in performance whereas we would normally expect to have to re-grind. Better weld quality and finish was observed. We were particularly impressed with the health and safety aspects and have taken the decision to remove all thoriated electrodes from site."
Production Service Manager
Airflow Developments, High Wycombe, UK
"We manufacture thin-walled hollow shaft products in type 316 stainless steel. Whereas with thoriated electrodes we regularly encounter problems with weld pitting which necessitates re-welding and often re-machining, this has been virtually eliminated when using MultiStrike®. Significant savings in the cost of post weld operations have been observed."
Lebus International, Texas, USA
ROSEMOUNT BOGNOR REGIS
"We have now had an opportunity to evaluate your MultiStrike® Electrodes and can report extended working life between re-grinds and improvement in initial strike rates. The most significant improvement however is in automatic machine use."
Rosemount Bognor Regis, UK
"We use computer controlled equipment for hot wire cladding with stellite. With thoriated electrodes we observed rapid contamination leading to regrinding after only 15/30 minutes. Using MultiStrike® has been a revelation since we can achieve 8 hours of work between regrinds. Savings in downtime have thus been significant."
Welding Engineer, Brighouse, UK
An HFT® Customer recently decided to purchase cheaper Tungsten Electrodes as a cost saving exercise.
Having tried alternatives, the customer experienced variable results with inconsistent welds, porosity and unusual arc behaviour.
Because of such performance the very long standing Huntingdon Fusion Techniques® customer, reverted to using MultiStrike® non thoriated tungsten electrodes.
On another cost saving exercise one of our Exclusive Distributors started to lose business from a MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes user.
Because their customer continued to purchase Multi Strikes®, their account was kept open and our Distributor is now winning back their lost business.
Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has received a multitude of accolades over the years for the MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes and any company with an interest to try these tungstens, may contact HFT® for a sample.
An HFT® Customer
"MultiStrikes® are the most consistent Tungsten Electrodes I have used over the past 34 years. I would not use anything else now.
I do not think that many people realise how important a good electrode is."
Frequently Asked Questions
1. We see and hear that there are other thoria-free ‘ecological’ tungstens available at lower prices than MultiStrikes®?
The MultiStrike® trademark has become an international industry standard.
When buying MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes you are purchasing a consistent, guaranteed, reliable, traceable product which will not vary and let you down in production. Many cheaper tungstens may have unreliable sources.
The MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes tip colour is known as ‘House Blue’, immediately distinguishable from any other tungsten and is part of the Trademark of Huntingdon Fusion Technqiues HFT®.
2. My latest order of MultiStrike® are not in their usual package, rather in a blue plastic tray with a clear top.
These are NOT MultiStrike®. Please notify us of the name of your distributor and we will try to rectify the problem and send you correctly packaged MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes.
3. What is in MultiStrike® Tungstens Electrodes to make them so good?
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes contain a blend of rare earth dopants to replace thoria. Our dopants are not radioactive and they are mixed in accurate proportions using statistical proportional control procedures, fully computerised to ensure that the tungstens are made to the same high standards every time.
4. Will you tell me what materials you use inside MultiStrike® Tungstens Electrodes?
The exact ingredients of MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are part of our intellectual property gained by extensive research and development to bring a quality product to the market place that is totally traceable, reliable and repeatable.
5. Can MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes be used to weld aluminium with AC welding?
Yes, MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are used widely and successfully for welding aluminium.
6. I tried MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes but I got tungsten inclusion in the weld.
Tungsten inclusions can be generated by poor grinding techniques or accidental dipping of a tungsten electrode into the weld pool.
Tungsten inclusions can be obtained when using any kind of tungsten electrode.
7. I have tried MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes but they make my welds dirty.
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are used to generate an arc. They cannot make a weld dirty. Dirty welds are produced by either insufficient gas coverage, disturbance of the gas flow or dirty and contaminated material being welded.
8. You said I would get 10 times more arc strikes than a thoriated tungsten, but mine only lasted two welds before I had to re-grind it.
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes will give ten times better performance than thoriated tungstens under identical conditions. Welding conditions will affect the life of all tungsten electrodes equally.
However, if a thoriated tungsten electrode is put onto an automatic machine welding with clean components and it gives 20 arc strikes before it fails, then a MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes will give 200 arc strikes.
9. I’m worried about the dust generated when I grind MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes.
Because MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes do not contain thoria or any other radiotoxic materials, the dust generated is not carcinogenic.
However, any local health and safety standards about the generation and collection of dust should be observed however.
10. Is there a classification for MultiStrike® as with most other electrodes?
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes conform to Standards EN 26848 and ANSI/AWS A5 12m-98.
