Keep a Distant 'Eye' on Your Purge

06W-PurgEye1000Remote-WeldPurgeMonitorWhen welding lengths of tube and pipework fabrications, as well as sections of pipelines of 20 metres length and more, one problem operators face is not receiving a fast and true weld purge reading from the purge zone.

Now, for the first time, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® makes it possible to have an immediate reading of the weld purge gas at the underside of the joint, from any distance up to 1,000 metres away with their PurgEye® 1000 Weld Purge Monitor®.

Luke Keane, Distributor Support for HFT® said: “By using a zirconia sensor in a remote module placed at the purge gas exhaust, really close to the weld, it is possible to instantaneously receive actual oxygen readings down to 10 ppm (0.001%) up to 1,000 metres away.”

This technology is the latest in the Family Range of Weld Purge Monitors® brought to the marketplace by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®.

Ensure your Weld Purging System doesn't burst

08W-PurgeGate-Valves-Weld-Purge-ControlMany Inflatable Tube and Pipe Weld Purging Systems are at risk of over-inflating during the weld purging process. As the heat caused by welding rises, the inflatable dams can expand beyond their safe limits and in addition, other personnel working near the welding area can vary the gas flow or pressure at random, causing over-inflation and bursting.

Once a burst occurs, the purge is lost and the weld will immediately oxidise in the presence of incoming air. The welder will then have to cease welding, grind out the oxidation and start the whole process again. On pipes below 36” diameter, the inside may not be accessible and the total joint may need to be cut out, leading to lengthy delays and high add-on costs.

To prevent such bursts, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has designed and now manufactures a PurgeGate® Valve System in order to prevent any over-pressurising of Inflatable Tube and Pipe Weld Purging Systems.

Block Pipes Instantly and Effectively with Pipestoppers®

02W-Pancake-Inflatable-Pipe-StoppersBlocking pipes in order to carry out routine maintenance, repair work or even for weld purging is easy with Pipestoppers®.

The Pipestoppers® Division at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® design and manufacture a range of Mechanical and Inflatable Pipestoppers® and Plugs to suit every application. Their newest addition to the Inflatable Pipestoppers® Range is the Pancake Stopper, for applications where insufficient length of pipe is available for the regular Cylindrical or Spherical Stopper.

Ron Sewell, Chairman at HFT® said: “With their low profile, the Pancake Stopper can fit into a pipe end that may be directly on an elbow or just inside a flanged neck on a casting. Other applications include blocking pipe ends to keep gases inside or to keep debris and vermin out.

Fast Purging of Heat-Treated Pipework

04W-HotPurgePreHeatedPipeworkPurgeSystemsChrome steel pipe joints, such as those used in the power industry for high pressure, high strength pipework, need to be pre-heated for welding and also require a post weld heat treatment. Equally, some high strength stainless steel weld joints need to undergo similar heat-treating cycles.

Weld joints of this nature need to be purged of oxygen and welded in an inert atmosphere, to prevent the oxidation that would otherwise lead to loss of corrosion resistance and imperfections in the joint metallurgy.

With the high temperatures and length of time at such temperatures, most weld purging systems are unsuitable. However, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have developed HotPurge® Inflatable Pipe Purging System for Heat Treated Chrome and High Strength Stainless Steel Pipe Joints where the temperatures might be as high as 760OC (1,400 OF) for many hours.

For Your PurgEyes® Only

PurgEye-API200-PHO-JB-PRLeading the way in design and development technology in Weld Purge Monitoring, the hand held, battery powered PurgEye® 200 Weld Purge Monitor® meets the needs of higher welding specifications requiring oxygen levels down to as low as 10 parts per million (ppm).

Designed and manufactured by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, the PurgEye® 200 is totally waterproof and dustproof rated to IP65 Standard.

The Weld Purge Monitor® has warning icons on the large screen to show low battery, low sensor conditions and also displays oxygen readings in percentage or in ppm very accurately down to 10 ppm.

Luke Keane, Distributor Support for HFT® said: “Weld Purge Monitors® are an essential instrument to help obtain non-oxidised, zero colour welds by monitoring the oxygen level when welding metals such as titanium, zirconium, nickel alloys and high purity stainless steels where high quality and strong welds are required free from metallurgical imperfections. Even though the PurgEye® 200 helps to produce these important zero colour joints it is probably the lowest cost Weld Purge Monitor® of its kind."

Purge your Tube and Pipes the Elite Way

29W-PurgEliteWeldPurgeSystemsWhen welding stainless, duplex, chrome steel and titanium tubes or pipes, it is important to purge the welding zone with an inert gas to prevent oxidisation, discolouration and to ensure a good internal weld profile.

After 40 years of innovation, design and manufacturing expertise in the field of tube and pipe weld purging, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has introduced PurgElite®, a range of low cost Tube and Pipe Purging Systems to achieve a clean, oxide free, zero colour weld.

Luke Keane, Distributor Support for HFT® said: “To save welders the expense of completely filling tubes and pipes with an inert gas, PurgElite® Systems are available, manufactured to suit pipe diameters from 1” to 24” (25 to 600 mm). They are made of low outgassing rate materials, which gives them the ability to produce high quality welds.”

Flexible Welding Enclosures®, Ultra Low Cost Welding Chambers

14W-FlexibleWeldingEnclosuresWhen welding titanium, zirconium and some stainless steel joints it is important that the welding zone is purged of oxygen to a level as low as 10 parts per million (ppm).

A flexible chamber is available from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® for a fraction of the cost of a rigid welding chamber. Flexible Welding Enclosures® provide a solution where a rigid chamber may not be economically viable or where space may be at a premium.

Luke Keane, Technical Support at HFT® said: “For many years the enormous cost of a metal enclosure prevented all but the major companies taking on work involving the fabrication of these metals. To the rescue came HFT® a decade or so ago with the introduction of these flexible welding bubbles.” Size for size, HFT®’s range of Flexible Welding Enclosures® can cost less than one tenth of a metal glove box and less than one hundredth of a vacuum system.

These enclosures provide a very fast purging time down to a few ppm of oxygen and are ideal for small production quantities of items that need total gas coverage.

Bright, Oxide Free Welds with Trailing Shields®

45W-WeldTrailingShieldsTo save expensive cleaning and pickling costs to remove oxidation and discolouration on stainless steel circumferential welding, radiused Trailing Shields® are available.

Manufactured by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, Trailing Shields® are suitable for any diameter of tube, pipe, tank or vessel from 1”. These lightweight devices simply attach to all standard manual or automatic TIG/GTAW and Plasma/PAW welding torches.

Luke Keane, Distributor Support for HFT® said: “The Trailing Shield® is connected to the argon gas supply and it diffuses gas out evenly without turbulence through the multi layers of stainless steel mesh built into the body of the shield. At each side, removable silicone rubber side shields provide a barrier to prevent the argon escaping sideways and remaining over the weld metal. These silicon shields are a consumable and are replaceable as they become worn.

As the weld is started, it has extra argon to that amount coming through the gas cup. Then as the welding torch is moved forward, the weld remains under an argon gas shield until the metal has cooled below its oxidation temperature.”
