Weld Purge your Pipes the “Elite” Way

23W-PurgEliteWeldPurgeSystemsWhen welding stainless, duplex, chrome steel and titanium tubes and pipes, it is important to purge the welding zone with an inert gas to prevent corrosion, oxidation, discolouration and to ensure a good internal weld profile with no metallurgical defects.

After 40 years of innovation, design and manufacturing expertise in the field of tube and pipe weld purging, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has introduced PurgElite®, a range of low cost Tube and Pipe Purging Systems to achieve a clean, oxide free, zero colour weld.

Georgia Gascoyne, CEO for HFT® said: “We recently had a customer who was wasting a lot of money in time and argon gas costs by filling entire pipework fabrications with argon in order to weld the stainless steel pipes in an inert environment. There were several 90º bends in the pipework, so the customer thought filling the whole pipework system was the only option.

Monitor your Weld Purge at a Low Cost

57W-PurgEye100-IP65-WeldPurgeMonitorWeld Purge Monitors® are essential instruments to help obtain non-oxidised, zero colour welds. By measuring the oxygen content before, during and after welding, high quality welds are achieved when welding metals such as stainless, chrome and duplex steels as well as titanium and nickel alloys.

Advancing in the science of manufacturing beyond other designs, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s market leading PurgEye® 100 can help to eliminate the significant post weld cleaning costs that occur when the oxygen level has not been monitored correctly during welding.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “We recently had a European Gas Turbine Manufacturer who was spending a lot of time and money cleaning oxidised stainless steel welds. They were using an unsuitable means to guess the reduction of oxygen.

Weld Backing Tape™ for Weld Purging

15W-WeldBackingTapeIt is important when welding metals such as stainless steel, titanium and zirconium that the welding zone is purged of oxygen even to as low as 10 parts per million (ppm) before, during and immediately after welding, in order to achieve a clean, oxide free, zero colour weld.

Recently an exciting discovery was made concerning the use of Argweld® Backing Tape™ available in Italy from Andit Automazione.

One customer showed how the use of his former ceramic backing tiles and the tiny space available for the weld root formation, prevented adequate argon flow and caused the welding arc to blow back at the welder.

Massimo from Andit said: "Ceramic backing tiles are designed for Submerged Arc Welding where oxidation is prevented by powder as opposed to argon, so the customers were using the wrong product for GTAW / TIG welding.

Weld Purging Company Provides First Class Service

24W-InflatableStoppersWhen Seabank, a major Power Station in Bristol, UK ordered weld purging equipment from a company in Germany which failed to arrive, the downtime started to cost the Power Station a lot of money and had their welders waiting around on site with nothing to do.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s Exclusive Distributor, West Country Welding were contacted and due to HFT®’s stock levels and great first class service, the new weld purging products were delivered to the site within three hours of the initial telephone call.

Bob Reakes for West Country Welding said: “The shutdown at Seabank Power Station in Avonmouth meant the welders were stood around waiting, wasting valuable time and money. The weld purging equipment ordered from a company in Germany never showed. Thanks to Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s stock levels, they got the welders up and running quickly.”

No Disruption to Pipe Repair with Accu-Freeze™

15W-Accu-Freeze-Pipe-Freezing-SystemsPublic buildings, factories, manufacturing plants, power stations, hotels, sports facilities, stadiums, apartment blocks and all commercial constructions may have pipework systems such as sprinkler systems for example, that are full of water or other fluid that need to be completely drained for the smallest of repair.

Such drainage costs time, money: with respect to the product that is lost and delays and costs related to bring the system back online. Now the repair can be done in-situ with the Accu-Freeze™ System, which will work on pipes up to 12” diameter and freeze most products that may be in the pipe.

Accu-Freeze™ Pipe Freezing System, available in Europe from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, makes it possible to create an ice plug either side of the repair zone to allow work to be carried out without draining the whole system.

Oil and Gas Pipes Welded Faster

07W-QuickPurgePipeWeldPurgeSystemTime is money and waiting for pipe joints to be purged ready for welding within the Oil and Gas Industry can take anything up to four hours, depending on the diameter of the pipe being welding and the method chosen for purging.

Huntingdon Fusion Techniques, HFT®‘s innovative QuickPurge® System dramatically reduces waiting times, producing zero colour welds and no loss of corrosion resistance caused by oxidation.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “A 36” diameter stainless steel pipe for example can be purged down to 100 parts per million (ppm) of oxygen in under 32 minutes. Compare this with purging using foam dams that will outgas heavily into the weld zone and will take hours, not a few minutes.

High speed pipe purging system QuickPurge® is leading the way in the field of purging tube, pipe and pipeline joints over 6” diameter, where oxygen levels are required to be as low as 10 (ppm) or less.”

Major Petrochemical Company uses Flexible Welding Enclosure®

04W-FlexibleWeldingEnclosuresDuring the construction of a jetty, for the import of liquid natural gas (LNG) in Ecuador, Bechtel, the largest construction and civil engineering company in the USA, had a number of small stainless steel socket welds to complete.

In the climate conditions there and with the small size of the welds, it was difficult to assure a good all round weld purge to avoid oxidation and the attendant metallurgical defects that might follow.

The solution was to purchase Flexible Welding Enclosure® from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, World Leading Weld Purging Experts.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® said: “With LNG pipework handling cryogenic gas at such low temperature, the propensity for cracking of welds is quite prominent and with socket welds already being a crack propagator if not set up correctly, it was wise to ensure that the welds were purged correctly.

Smallest Ever Weld Trailing Shield®

54W-WeldTrailingShieldsWhen welding titanium using the GTAW / TIG process, the gas shield from the welding torch needs extending for protection from oxidation and for productivity. Although welders will use a larger than normal gas cup to provide a big surface area of protection, this still limits the speed at which they can move the welding torch.

To provide additional surface protection and in order to weld faster, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® manufacture a range of Weld Trailing Shields®, effectively long gas cups fixed onto and dragged along behind the welding torch, which ensures the weld remains under an argon gas shield until the metal has cooled below its oxidation temperature.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “Professionally manufactured Weld Trailing Shields® are usually around 100 – 150 mm long as standard, with specials for automatic welding being as long as 450 mm (17”), although many applications require smaller Weld Trailing Shields®.
