Fast Purging of Heat Treated Pipework

05W-HotPurgePreHeatedPipeworkPurgeSystemsHigh strength steel joints, such as those used in the power industry for high-pressure pipework, need to be pre-heated for welding and also require a post weld heat treatment.

Weld joints of this nature are often purged of oxygen and welded in an inert atmosphere for various reasons, one of which is to reduce the risk of ‘sugaring’, an imperfection that could allow metal pieces to break off inside pipework and cause damage to turbines.

With the high temperatures and length of time at such temperatures, most weld purging systems are unsuitable. HotPurge® has been developed by International Weld Purging Specialists Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, an Inflatable Pipe Purging System for Heat Treated Chrome and High Strength Stainless Steel Pipe Joints where the temperatures might be as high as 760ºC (1,400ºF) for many hours.

Introducing Super Heavy Duty Weld Backing Tape™

Weld Backing TapeMany weld joints require a controlled underbead profile of the first root pass. Uneven root profiles can cause product entrapment that may contaminate a process as well as interrupting flow characteristics.

Where manual welding cannot control the weld root profile sufficiently well, or when an automatic weld process is unable to reach satisfactory speeds while still obtaining satisfactory underbeads, it is common to use a method of backing below the weld. A cost effective way to provide support for molten metal below a weld joint, is to use Argweld® Weld Backing Tape™.

Weld Purging Experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have recently developed a super heavy duty Weld Backing Tape™, which provides the support to produce perfect weld underbeads when welding with currents of up to 600 Amps.

Freeze Sealing for Pipe Repairs with Qwik-Freezer™

06W-Qwik-Freeze-Pipe-FreezingFreeze sealing pipes for repair or maintenance is an increasingly popular alternative to ‘hot-tapping’ and eliminates the need to shut or drain down a system for repairs and maintenance. These systems work by creating ice plugs (or ‘freeze seals’) upstream of the repair site or on either side of an area where a pipe system needs to be maintained.

The Pipestoppers® Division at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® provides Qwik-Freezer™, the industry standard portable CO2 Pipe Freezing System. With thousands of kits in use around the world, Qwik-Freezer™ covers pipe diameters from 3/8” – 8” (9 – 200 mm).

Qwik-Freezer™ is quick and easy to use, requires little set-up time and is the only CO2 Pipe Freezing System capable of freezing up to 8” pipe. Even for smaller diameter freezes, Qwik-Freezer™ produces ice plugs that are significantly more reliable and robust, capable of withstanding far more pressure than the smaller plugs that other types of systems will produce.

Pipe Welding becomes Easier

06W-InflatableWeldPurgeDamsNew devices for welding stainless, duplex, chrome steels and titanium are launched by Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®.

Typically for closure welds, tight bends, T piece joints and dome end connections where a conventional Tandem Weld Purging System cannot be used, a range of low cost, single ended Inflatable Weld Purge Dams is available for pipe diameters from 6 to 96 inches (150 mm up to 2,440 mm).

These lightweight systems are easy to inflate and are heat resistant up to 90oC (194oF).

Ron Sewell, Chairman at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® said: “Even today, many companies are still allowing their technicians to spend many hours fabricating dams made of foam, cardboard, adhesive tape, wood and so on. Like paper, these materials contain a high percentage of water, which is very undesirable to have in the presence of a weld.

Measure your Argon for the best Weld Quality

07W-PurgEye100-IP65-WeldPurgeMonitorWeld Purge Monitors® are essential instruments, usually needed to help achieve non-oxidised, zero colour welds when welding metals such as stainless, chrome and duplex steels as well as titanium and nickel alloys.

Few welding personnel realise however that they can use their Weld Purge Monitors® to measure the quality of the argon gas being used during weld purging.

A low cost PurgEye® 100 Weld Purge Monitor® available from World Leading Weld Purging Experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® can quickly ensure the quality of the argon gas being used by measuring from atmospheric level (20.94%), down to as low as 100 parts per million (ppm).

A customer recently said: “More and more in our experience we are finding inferior argon that isn’t what it says on the bottle. Often, customers blame other equipment such as their purging systems or monitors for getting bad heat tint, when in actual fact it could well be their source gas quality.

Weld Purge your Pipes at a low cost with Weld Purge Film®

02W-SolubleWeldPurgeFilmWhen tubes and pipes of certain materials, such as stainless steel, titanium, nickel alloys and zirconium are welded together, it is desirable to purge the oxygen out of the inside of the weld zone to prevent it from reacting with the hot metal and causing oxidation, porosity and corrosion.

Some weld purging products available include Inflatable Systems (balloons), tandem units made of rubber discs and even double ended systems made of wood, foam and other unsuitable materials. Such dual ended systems require an open end to retrieve the system after the weld is finished and therefore, are not suitable for closing welds.

To overcome this limitation, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has developed and manufactured Argweld® Weld Purge Film® kits, with water-soluble materials that can be used for open assemblies and closing welds.

Dramatically reduce Weld Purging times with QuickPurge®

Quick Purge Pipe Weld Purge SystemTime after time, welders, supervisors, quality control personnel and others are kept waiting, sometimes for many hours, for stainless steel or titanium pipes to be purged of oxygen ready for welding.

In addition, all involved are watching the expensive inert argon gas flow away to waste after it has passed through the pipe, gathering oxygen and other harmful gases along the way.

Such time loss and material waste can be avoided now because of the innovative QuickPurge® Tube, Pipe and Pipeline Weld Purging Systems designed and manufactured by leading weld purging specialists Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®.

Switch to MultiStrike® for an improved Tungsten Electrode performance

06W MultiStrikesTungstenElectrodesTungsten Electrodes are used when arc welding with the Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) process or Plasma welding. It is necessary to grind tungsten electrodes after they have touched the molten weld pool or the filler rod to the tungsten, which is not only time consuming but can be a hazard to health.

Recognising both the performance requirement and the risk to health posed by thoriated tungsten electrodes, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®’s MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes not only deliver an increased performance, they also reduce the risk to health.

A customer in Cheshire, UK recently said: "The introduction of MultiStrike® has been welcomed by all our welding staff. The new electrodes are giving excellent results and demonstrating much improved strike characteristics. Although more expensive than the previous electrodes, their life is significantly longer which is expected to lead to long-term cost savings. We are also aware of the health and safety benefits of using non-thoriated electrodes."

Flexible Welding Enclosures® for Zero Colour Titanium Welds

31W-FlexibleWeldingEnclosuresWhen welding titanium, zirconium and some stainless steel joints it is important that the welding zone is purged of oxygen to a level as low as 10 parts per million (ppm).

Flexible Welding Enclosures® are available from Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® for a fraction of the cost of a rigid welding chamber. Flexible Welding Enclosures® provide a solution where a rigid chamber may not be economically viable or where space may be at a premium.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “In his workshop in Santa Rosa, California, retired CEO Bob Lee is recreating a famous Can-Am racecar, the Ti22 that was destroyed in 1973. This car was the first Monocoque road racecar to make extensive use of titanium. With over 40 years of experience of welding titanium, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have become very involved in this project, providing equipment and technical assistance where required.
