Inert Gas Welding Monitor

purgeye desk, weld purge monitor, weld purging, inert gas welding, purgenetPrior to inert gas welding (weld purging), the oxygen content must be reduced (purged) to a level as low as 100 ppm for stainless steels and as low as 50 ppm for zirconium and titanium. When oxygen levels are too high, the parent materials will suffer from a loss of corrosion resistance and metallurgical imperfections.

The innovative PurgEye® Desk, a new monitor designed and manufactured by weld purging experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, is leading the way in inert gas purging technology by reading oxygen levels from 1,000 ppm, right down to levels as low as 1ppm (highly accurate to 10 ppm), ensuring welders achieve perfect oxide free, zero colour welds time and time again.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “The PurgEye® Desk is for use with Welding Chambers and Enclosures, as well as with Orbital Welding Machines and other Automatic Welding Systems. One huge addition to the PurgEye® Desk is our revolutionary PurgeNet™, for the in-line connection of additional accessories that allows the Weld Purge Monitor® to control welding systems based upon oxygen level as well as to provide indications of high and low oxygen levels and even give dew point measurements.”

Freeze it and make your pipe repair easy with Accu-Freeze™

accu-freeze, qwik-freezer, pipe freezing, tube freezing, liquid nitrogen pipe freezingRepairs and maintenance work required on tubes and pipes can cause unforeseen costs, with entire systems having to be drained down to ensure no liquids are present when repairs are made.

To dramatically reduce operating costs, the Pipestoppers® Division of Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® introduced Accu-Freeze™, the liquid nitrogen (LN2) Pipe Freezing System to create a single ice plug one side of, or double plugs either side of a valve to be changed, for example, in a selected section of pipe or tubing.

Luke Keane, Technical Support for HFT® said: “We have many plumbing and maintenance companies already switching to our Pipe Freezing Systems due to the significant cost savings attached to the avoidance of draining pipes and systems for repairs.”

Accu-Freeze™ isolates the section of pipe or tube, allowing repairs or modifications to be made without loss of fluid and drainage time.”

Weld Backing Tape® saves grinding time and costs

08W WeldBackingTapeWhen the undersides of welds are ragged and uneven, they often need grinding to smooth them out. This costs labour time and money for grinding materials.

The use of Argweld® fiberglass Backing Tape® can save these costs by leaving a smooth fully penetrating, clean weld that needs no further work.

Weld Purging Experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have a range of four Backing Tapes® to support all weld beads made with welding currents, from 80 amps, up to as high as 600 amps.

Weld Backing Tape®” is a glass fibre weld backing system that supports the heavy, molten weld metal, allowing it to solidify before it could fall away from the joint.

Furthermore, the tape traps the inert gas from the tig/gtaw weld torch effectively providing a back purge facility.

Construction Site Weld Purge Monitor®

03W PurgEye Site Weld Purge Monitor

There are considerable challenges when working on constructions sites, particularly when the conditions are in the open air. Taking into account global conditions, there might be extreme heat or extreme cold, sandstorms, dust storms, rain storms and winds.

All conditions have their own difficulties for expensive equipment and quality results.

Because of the extreme variations experienced by their customers, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Limited, from the UK, have designed and developed a Weld Purge Monitor® that is resistant to the circumstances of extremes as mentioned above.

Weld Purge Monitors® are critical to achieving zero colour welds of high integrity to suit all conditions where stainless, duplex and chrome steels are being welded as well as titanium and nickel alloys.

Zero colour oxide free welds for manual welders

01W WeldTrailingShields

Titanium, stainless steel and other corrosion resistant materials need to be shielded with an inert gas while welding takes place, in order to protect the molten weld pool from combining with oxygen and nitrogen from the surrounding air.

Without this protection, welds will oxidise and can form metallurgical defects that may cause weld joint failure.

TIG (GTAW) and Plasma (PAW) welding torches are fitted with gas cups, through which inert gas flows and protects the molten weld metal around the arc, however as the weld torch travels further along the weld seam, the welded metal is still hot enough to oxidise as it is exposed to air. In most cases the oxidation has to be removed to reduce the risk of weld failure.

TIG (GTAW) welders need certainty with their welding equipment

13W MultiStrikesTungstenElectrodesOne key to a good TIG weld is the electrode.

At this time, welders are going through a period of uncertainty as far as the information and circumstances arising with respect to their electrodes.

Until now, the best scientifically confirmed electrode was made with Tungsten, with a small addition of a material called thorium oxide, also known as thoria.

Since the 1970’s when the UK Health and Safety authority of the time (HSE) issued warnings about the radioactive effects of long term exposure to Thoria, welders have been uncertain about their standard red tipped tungstens which contain 2% of that material.

Faster pipe purging with QuickPurge®

02W QuickPurgePipeWeldPurgeSystemWhen stainless steel, duplex steels or titanium pipes need to be welded in the process industries, they generally have to be purged of air and water vapour, in order to obtain the quality of weld demanded by such industries.

Even today, more than 40 years after high quality pipe weld systems were developed, welders are still carving crude discs out of sponge foam without understanding the characteristics of such materials.

Now a days low cost, high quality products are available that save them countless volumes of time and money.

Most sponge foam products are open cell materials, which allow gas to pass through, so as fast as the inert purge gas is pushing the air out of one end of a pipe, oxygen and water vapour is entering at the other end.

Handy Oxygen Measuring Instruments for Welders

02W PurgEye100 IP65 WeldPurgeMonitorWelders need to measure oxygen near the weld when they are joining metals like titanium, stainless, chrome and duplex steels.

A fast and reliable way to do this, is to use a hand held monitor near the joint to ‘sniff’ samples of the gas and to check the amount of oxygen present.

Ordinary oxygen monitors are not suitable for use in this application, because they are calibrated to be accurate at atmospheric pressure for health and safety purposes.

So special oxygen monitors are available that are calibrated to be accurate at 100 ppm of oxygen, which is a suitable value to guide those welding stainless steel and 10 ppm which is an excellent value for the welding of titanium.

New Tungsten Electrode Grinder

05W Tungsten Grinder TEG1000 TEG3Ensuring your Tungsten Electrode is sharpened correctly can help to improve weld quality. Tungsten Electrode Grinders are a convenient, safer and more accurate way than other methods of grinding Tungsten Electrodes.

Back by popular demand, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have re-initiated the manufacturing of the TEG-2 Tungsten Electrode Grinder, which was retired from their product range a number of years ago.

It has an updated design with a number of improvements and the model name is now the TEG-1000.

Georgia Gascoyne, CEO said: “Since we stopped manufacturing the TEG-2 Tungsten Electrode Grinder, we’ve had many requests to bring it back into our product range. We are excited to announce that it’s back, with a new modern look and attractive price.”

Flexible Welding Enclosures® for Additive Manufacturing

24W FlexibleWeldingEnclosuresWhen welding titanium and any other reactive metal for additive manufacturing, it is important that the welding zone is purged of oxygen and nitrogen to a level as low as 10 parts per million (ppm) of O2 or less.

After more than 40 years of experience in the field of manufacturing Flexible Welding Enclosures®, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques, HFT® have broadened their range from the standard circular enclosures, to include purpose designed and manufactured models to encompass volumes of 30 m3 and greater to meet the needs of research and production entities internationally.

The ultraviolet stabilised, transparent, low vapour pressure polymer used for these enclosures, is tough and not easily damaged, but for those cases where damage may occur, a repair kit is included with all enclosures as they are shipped, with extra kits assembled and shipped on a next day delivery process if ever required.

Power Piping Perfectly Purged

15W HotPurgePreHeatedPipeworkPurgeSystemsSpecial new high temperature materials allow production problems to be solved. Thanks to the high temperature resistance of glass coated cloth, it is now possible to manufacture Weld Purging Systems to resist temperatures up to 760ºC.

This is particularly valuable for welding pipework suitable for power stations and other utilities that produce high pressure steam for the rotation of turbines to produce electricity for the national grid.

Usually the materials specified for such pipework are chrome steels that need to be heated up to 300ºC prior to and during welding and 760ºC for heat treating/annealing (for stress relief purposes) afterwards.

For a number of technical reasons, the inside of the welds made to join the pipework have to be covered in an inert gas to prevent oxidation and metallurgical defects. In order to provide the conditions for welding the joints described, a weld purging system is generally used to isolate a small volume either side of the weld, to create optimum conditions.

Low Cost 1 PPM Weld Purge Monitor®

purgeye, nano, weld purging, oxygen reader, ppm traceFor many years, oxygen monitors and gas analysers have been used for weld purging. These instruments have been designed and calibrated for accuracy at atmospheric oxygen level, but not for weld purging where accuracy is required when reading much lower oxygen levels.

With their scientific background, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have designed and manufactured the PurgEye® 300 Nano, the World’s first and only low cost, no frills, Weld Purge Monitor® that measures accurately down to 10 parts per million (ppm) on a large alpha numeric display.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “The PurgEye® 300 Nano has been developed for weld purging where data logging, alarms and welder control are not necessarily required. It is small, lightweight and inexpensive. There are no knobs, no switches, no controls, making this a really simple, ‘plug and play’ monitor.”
