Tube and Pipe Weld Purging costs paid in one weld with PurgExtra®

Weld Purging is the act of removing oxygen from the vicinity of a weld, before, during and after the welding of certain metals, such as stainless steel titanium and nickel alloys. An inert gas is used (usually argon), displacing the oxygen from the weld zone and therefore ensuring the metal does not come into contact with oxygen as it is heated, which could lead to oxidation and a loss of corrosion resistance properties.

For tube and pipe welding, it is proven very cost effective to restrict the area needed to be purged, making vast savings on time and inert gas costs. This is done using an inflatable tube and pipe purging system.

PurgExtra® has been developed, for purging tube and pipe joints from 1 – 24” diameter. This design features an extra gas purge hose to speed up the purging process to ensure that the cost of the product is paid for in just one weld.

Thoriated Tungsten Electrodes contain thoria, a radioactive element that can be dangerous to heath. During the grinding of the electrode there is a generation of radiotoxic dust, with the risk of this being inhaled by the welder.

Welders today continue to use thoriated Tungsten Electrodes. Because thoria was much cheaper than alternative elements to lower the work function of pure tungsten, this type became the industry standard.

Titanium Welding with the PurgEye® Desk

Oxygen and nitrogen will also diffuse into titanium at temperatures above 400°C raising the tensile strength but embrittling the metal. In the form of a powder or metal shavings titanium also constitutes a fire hazard. Despite this reactivity titanium is used extensively in chemical processing, offshore, automotive, medical, aerospace and numerous other applications.“

During the welding of titanium, it is therefore crucial that the oxygen level surrounding the weld is purged of oxygen down to as low as 50 ppm or less. Titanium parts are usually welded inside a welding enclosure, where the entire atmosphere surrounding the weld can be kept at a controlled level of oxygen.

Chemical Resistant Inflatable Stoppers for blocking pipes containing hydrocarbon liquids and gases

During petrochemical operations, where hydrocarbons are present in liquid or gas form, inflatable stoppers are often used for various applications such as debris stopping, leak testing, low-pressure hydrostatic tests, blocking the release of hydrocarbon gases and a variety of plumbing operations.

Inert Shielding Gas Monitor for Stainless Steel Welding

When welding tanks, vessels, chambers and pipes, the most cost effective inert gas used for shielding is argon. As argon is heavier than air, it displaces the air containing oxygen and water upwards and out of a vent tube which can be fed to a Weld Purge Monitor®.

This process, called Weld Purging, will ensure oxide free, metallurgically sound welds in critical joints made of stainless steel, titanium and other refractory metals.

During stainless steel welding, the oxygen content must be purged down to a level lower than 100 ppm. Titanium and other sensitive materials may have to be purged down to 20 parts per million to obtain oxide free joints. Measuring the oxygen level in shielding gas is therefore crucial.

When welding stainless steel, titanium or zirconium pipes, or pipework, the oxygen level within the pipe must be reduced to a level of 50 ppm, or lower in certain cases. The most cost-effective solution is to restrict the volume around the joint with a Tandem Weld Purging System.
