PurgElite® for Zero Colour Tube and Pipe Welds

purgelite, tube and pipe purging, weld purging, huntingdon fusion, pruge bladdeWelders can spend hours filling entire tubes and pipes with an expensive inert gas in order to achieve oxide free, zero colour stainless steel welds.

After more than 40 years of innovation, design and manufacturing expertise in the field of tube and pipe weld purging, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® has introduced PurgElite®, a range of low cost Tube and Pipe Purging Systems to achieve a clean, oxide free, zero colour weld in just minutes.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “To save welders the expense of completely filling tubes and pipes with an inert gas, PurgElite® Systems are available, manufactured to suit pipe diameters from 1” to 24” (25 to 600 mm). They are designed with a robust inflatable bag on either side of a spinal tube that is used for inflation. They inflate and seal in the pipe, restricting the volume that is needed to be purged, to just 250 mm either side of the weld joint.”

The special spinal tube is resistant to hot metal up to 300ºC (572ºF) and is super flexible to allow movement of the PurgElite® Systems around 180º bends if necessary. These spinal tubes are made of a low outgassing rate material, so there is no risk of weld contamination.

Accurate Stainless and Titanium Weld Purging with the PurgEye® 200

weld purge monitor, titanium welding, oxygen monitor, handy purgeQuality Weld Purging is essential when welding metals such as stainless steel, zirconium, nickel alloys and titanium. The area around the weld must be purged of oxygen to as low as 50 parts per million (ppm) before, during and after welding to ensure all joints are metallurgically sound and oxide-free.

To remain at the forefront of Weld Purging Technology, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have launched the updated hand-held PurgEye® 200 Weld Purge Monitor®, now with PurgeNet™.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “The correct use of a Weld Purge Monitor®, designed and calibrated specifically for weld purging, will ensure that all welds remain free from oxidation and metallurgical imperfections.”

“The PurgEye® 200 is designed and manufactured with the HFT® revolutionary PurgeNet™, allowing networking to a range of accessories. Typically, one accessory allows direct interface to an Orbital Welder or any other automatic welding machine, so that the oxygen level in the vicinity of the weld can be monitored and the welding machine can be switched on or off according to pre-set oxygen levels. A second accessory is an audible and visual warning device that will signal externally when oxygen levels are lower and higher than pre-set levels.”

Low Cost Nylon Weld Purge Plugs™

orbital welding, nylon plugs, weld purging, weld purge plugs, back purge plugsIt is important when welding stainless steel and titanium tube and pipe joints to produce zero colour, oxide-free welds both on the inside and outside, although it is not always easy to weld purge stubs, elbows and tees.

For welding nickel alloy, titanium and stainless steel tubes and pipes, including stubs, elbows and tees, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have designed and developed clinically clean, white nylon Weld Purge Plugs™, providing a great barrier for weld purging.

Luke Keane, Technical Support for HFT® said: “Where complicated pipework systems have to be filled with inert gas, Weld Purge Plugs™ are a perfect product to seal all holes and orifices for quality internal weld purging. They can also be used for weld purging small or odd diameter pipes where conventional inline pipe purging systems may not be practical.”

No Risk of Lost Welds with Weld Purge Film®

foam purge dams, purging film, weld purge paper, purge and weldLow cost weld purging can prove complex, with many welders making savings by constructing their own foam or paper dams in order to reduce the purge volume, making weld purging times shorter.

Such improvised purge dams have severe technical limitations that can lead to loss of welds when they leak or slip from position thus flooding the welding zone with oxygen.

To overcome these challenges Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have designed and developed the Argweld® Weld Purge Film® Kits to make weld purging affordable and successful.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “With the use of our low cost Weld Purge Film®, welders can ensure that their dams do not come loose during welding, thus, no more lost welds!"

Weld Purge Film® Kits can be used on pipe diameters up to 900 mm (36”) and for temperatures up to 300ºC (572ºF) without the material burning, coming loose and losing the weld purge.

Weld Purge Dams for Dished Ends and Short Pipes

weld purge dams, purge bladder, back purging, purge and weld, weld purgeWeld Purging (back purging) describes the removal of oxygen from the vicinity of a weld before, during and after welding. For pipe and tank welding of stainless steels, titanium and chrome steels, it is good practice to restrict the area required to be purged, usually with an inflatable tandem weld purging system.

For the purging of short pipe pieces and dished end or dome end welds however, the tandem devices are unsuitable. Welders and their helpers over the years have created single dams to block the ends, of pipes and cylindrical tanks using easily obtainable, locally available material.

Ron Sewell, Chairman at Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® said: “Even today, many companies are still allowing their technicians to spend many hours fabricating dams made of foam, cardboard, adhesive tape, wood, paper and so on. These materials contain a high percentage of water, which is very undesirable to have in the presence of a weld.”

Bright, shiny, oxide-free welds with PurgExtra®

pipe weld purging, purgextra, purge bladder, back purging, oxide free weldsTubes and pipes made from titanium, stainless steel, chrome/nickel steels are mostly required to be welded in a non-oxidised environment in order to achieve a metallurgically correct, zero colour weld. Best results are obtained by reducing the volume to be purged, with an inflatable Weld Purging System.

Leading the way in Weld Purging Technology, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have developed PurgExtra®, for purging tube and pipe joints from 1 – 24” diameter that provide an extra gas purge hose to speed up the purging process even further.

Additional advantages of this design improvement are that the operator can use the extra purge gas supply for welding reactive metal joints in particular, such as those made from titanium and zirconium. In addition, the extra gas can be used for cooling welded joints faster than normal, where permissible.

Inert Gas Welding Monitor

purgeye desk, weld purge monitor, weld purging, inert gas welding, purgenetPrior to inert gas welding (weld purging), the oxygen content must be reduced (purged) to a level as low as 100 ppm for stainless steels and as low as 50 ppm for zirconium and titanium. When oxygen levels are too high, the parent materials will suffer from a loss of corrosion resistance and metallurgical imperfections.

The innovative PurgEye® Desk, a new monitor designed and manufactured by weld purging experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT®, is leading the way in inert gas purging technology by reading oxygen levels from 1,000 ppm, right down to levels as low as 1ppm (highly accurate to 10 ppm), ensuring welders achieve perfect oxide free, zero colour welds time and time again.

Ron Sewell, Chairman for HFT® said: “The PurgEye® Desk is for use with Welding Chambers and Enclosures, as well as with Orbital Welding Machines and other Automatic Welding Systems. One huge addition to the PurgEye® Desk is our revolutionary PurgeNet™, for the in-line connection of additional accessories that allows the Weld Purge Monitor® to control welding systems based upon oxygen level as well as to provide indications of high and low oxygen levels and even give dew point measurements.”

Weld Backing Tape® saves grinding time and costs

08W WeldBackingTapeWhen the undersides of welds are ragged and uneven, they often need grinding to smooth them out. This costs labour time and money for grinding materials.

The use of Argweld® fiberglass Backing Tape® can save these costs by leaving a smooth fully penetrating, clean weld that needs no further work.

Weld Purging Experts Huntingdon Fusion Techniques HFT® have a range of four Backing Tapes® to support all weld beads made with welding currents, from 80 amps, up to as high as 600 amps.

Weld Backing Tape®” is a glass fibre weld backing system that supports the heavy, molten weld metal, allowing it to solidify before it could fall away from the joint.

Furthermore, the tape traps the inert gas from the tig/gtaw weld torch effectively providing a back purge facility.
