Some Specific Background and Science
The work function of a metal or alloy is the energy needed to remove an electron from Fermi level in the material to a point at an infinite distance outside the surface.
This is relevant to TIG welding since the lower the work function of an electrode, the lower the voltage necessary to strike an arc.
The work function of tungsten is 4.35 ev. Therefore, the addition of a stable metal oxide with a work function lower than pure tungsten, lowers the work function of the tungsten.
Thorium's work function is 3.4 ev
The special blend of dopants in MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes has a work function of 2.9 ev.
Huntingdon Fusion Techniques special blend of dopants along with its stringent in-house production specification ensure that the dopant is distributed evenly through the Techweld MultiStrike®Tungsten maintaining an even performance from start to finish.

"We manufacture small pharmaceutical fittings using manual TIG welding and produce tube-tube joints using mechanised orbital welding. In both applications we have observed a four to five time improvement between re-grinding when replacing thoriated tungsten with your MultiStrike® Electrodes." New York, USA
"The number of arc strikes between re-sharpening is considerably greater with MultiStrike® than with thoriated electrodes. We also find the lower heat input is a benefit since we often weld in very close proximity to glass." Senior Production Engineer
"The introduction of MultiStrike® Electrodes has been welcomed by all our welding staff. The new electrodes are giving excellent results and demonstrating much improved strike characteristics. Although more expensive than the previous electrodes, their life is significantly longer which is expected to lead to long-term cost savings. We are also aware of the health and safety benefits of using non-thoriated electrodes." European Manufacturing Facility
"We have tested your MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes under production conditions where we need to make short lengths welds using the TIG process. On a batch of 50 components only 2 light re-grinds were required compared to 7 heavy regrinds when using thoriated electrodes. Even when the welder occasionally touched the work with the electrode there was no material change in performance whereas we would normally expect to have to re-grind. Better weld quality and finish was observed. We were particularly impressed with the health and safety aspects and have taken the decision to remove all thoriated electrodes from site." Production Service Manager
"We manufacture thin-walled hollow shaft products in type 316 stainless steel. Whereas with thoriated electrodes we regularly encounter problems with weld pitting which necessitates re-welding and often re-machining, this has been virtually eliminated when using MultiStrike® Tungstens. Significant savings in the cost of post weld operations have been observed." Texas, USA
"We have now had an opportunity to evaluate your MultiStrike® Electrodes and can report extended working life between re-grinds and improvement in initial strike rates. The most significant improvement however is in automatic machine use." Technical Manager
"We use computer controlled equipment for hot wire cladding with stellite. With thoriated electrodes we observed rapid contamination leading to regrinding after only 15/30 minutes. Using MultiStrike® Tungstens has been a revelation since we can achieve 8 hours of work between regrinds. Savings in downtime have thus been significant." Welding Engineer, Brighouse, UK
Frequently Asked Questions
MultiStrike® Tungstens after 200 welds
1.0 We see and hear that there are other thoria-free 'ecological' tungstens available at lower prices than MultiStrikes®?
The MultiStrike® trademark has become an international industry standard.
When buying MultiStrike® Tungstens, you are purchasing a consistent, guaranteed, reliable, traceable product which will not vary and let you down in production.
Many cheaper tungstens may have unreliable sources.
The MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes tip colour is known as 'House Blue', immediately distinguishable from any other tungsten and is part of the Trademark of Huntingdon Fusion Technqiues.
2.0 My latest order of MultiStrike® are not in their usual package, rather in a blue plastic tray with a clear top.
These are NOT MultiStrike®. Please notify us of the name of your Distributor and we will try to rectify the problem and send you correctly packaged MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes.
3.0 What is in MultiStrike® Tungstens to make them so good?
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes contain a blend of rare earth dopants to replace Thoria. Our dopants are not radioactive and they are mixed in accurate proportions using statistical proportional control procedures, fully computerised to ensure that the tungstens are made to the same high standards every time.
4.0 Will you tell me what materials you use inside MultiStrike® Tungstens?
The exact ingredients of MultiStrike® Tungstens are part of our intellectual property gained by extensive research and development to bring a quality product to the market place that is totally traceable, reliable and repeatable.
5.0 I have tried MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes but they make my welds dirty.
Tungsten electrodes are used to generate an arc. They cannot make a weld dirty. Dirty welds are produced by either insufficient gas coverage, disturbance of the gas flow or dirty and contaminated material being welded.
6.0 I tried MultiStrike® Tungstens but I got tungsten inclusion in the weld.
Tungsten inclusions can be generated by poor grinding techniques or accidental dipping of a tungsten electrode into the weld pool. Tungsten inclusions can be obtained when using any kind of tungsten electrode. To achieve better grinding, accurately and repeatedly everytime, try our Techweld™ Tungsten Electrode Grinders Model TEG-3.
7.0 You said I would get 10 times more arc strikes than a thoriated tungsten, but mine only lasted two welds before I had to re-grind it.
MultiStrike® Tungstens will give ten times better performance than thoriated tungstens under identical conditions.
Welding conditions will affect the life of all tungsten electrodes equally.
However if a thoriated tungsten electrode is put onto an automatic machine welding with clean components and it gives 20 arc strikes before it fails, then a MultiStrike® tungsten will give 200 arc strikes.
8.0 Can MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes be used to weld aluminium with AC welding?
Yes, MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes are used widely and successfully for welding aluminium
9.0 I'm worried about the dust generated when I grind MultiStrike® Tungstens.
Because MultiStrike® Tungstens do not contain thoria or any other radiotoxic materials, the dust generated is not carcinogenic. Any local Health and Safety standards about the generation and collection of dust should be observed however. For such cases, Huntingdon Fusion Techniques Limited supplies a unique Tungsten Electrode Grinder with a vacuum dust collection facility, designated TEG-3.
10.0 Is there a classification for MultiStrike® as with most other electrodes?
MultiStrike® Tungsten Electrodes conform to Standards EN 26848 and ANSI/AWS A5 12m-98
